International Internships in Africa and Latin America

Would you like to know what life is like for other Deaf communities in developing countries in Latin America and Africa?  Perhaps you have taken a French or a Spanish class but would like to have a more in-depth immersion experience in another country? If so, you will be interested to know that the Foreign Languages Department at Gallaudet offers an exciting program that makes connections with Deaf communities in Latin America and in French speaking countries in Africa.

Internships in Latin America include the following countries: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

Internships in French-speaking African countries include: Cameroon and Gabon.

Internship length: two months (typically in the summer) or a full semester, either in the fall or in the spring, depending on your preference.

Internship components:

Internship activities related to your major. Any major area qualifies.  You will gain a minimum of three Gallaudet credits for this internship.

You will stay with a local deaf family, learn their language, and experience their culture in a true immersion environment.

You will interact with the local community both inside and outside the home.

In addition to learning the local sign language, you will also have the opportunity to practice and improve on your written Spanish or written French skills.

Requirements:

Two semesters minimum of Spanish (for internships in Latin America) or French (for internships in Africa) previous to departure.

Fill out an application in the fall

Sign up for an orientation course in the spring in order to plan all the details and be ready to function in your country of choice.
